Renting a room
If you are renting or thinking of renting a room in someone's home there are some important matters to be aware of. It is worthwhile finding out what the issues are and being conscious of your rights.
Housing standards
In law, a resident landowner letting is where the landowner and the renter live in the same building. This includes conversions where they live in different parts of the same property but excludes reason built flats, with landowner and renter in different flats.
Resident landowner lettings differ from other types of tenancy in two ways: rent and security of term. This means that tenants:
- do not have a right to challenge the level of rent that he/she has agreed to pay
- can be given less notice to leave if the landowner wants to end the letting
It is valuable reading all the information provided in the leaflet "Renting rooms in someone's home" and taking legal advice if you are unsure of anything.
